Sirois Kaua’i Island Review – September 2023

Thank you for supporting our sister island Maui in its recovery! Although the recovery will take time, at least those who lost loved ones, homes, businesses, and life as they knew it have the awareness that the world genuinely cares.

In July’s newsletter we communicated on Governor Josh Green’s Emergency Proclamation Relating to Housing as a means of fast-tracking housing across the state. In August, the Maui and Big Island fires occurred, and in September, after backlash from local residents and environmental groups, the Governor walked back his Emergency Proclamation by considerable measure beginning with the insertion of the word “Affordable” in the title, reinstating environmental and historical reviews, and applying the state’s Sunshine Law which allows for public comment.

As a result of this flip flop, any mid to large scale housing development will be years in the making, which means keeping pressure on housing prices throughout Hawai‘i. Remember that while this state needs Affordable Housing, we also need Missing Middle options. On Kaua‘i there are pockets available for immediate development of both, which by zoning, prohibit vacation rental. The areas that make the most sense, given plans in the works, are Kōloa and Līhu‘e.

  • In 2024 get ready for tiered taxing on vacation rental properties
  • Make sure to file County of Kaua‘i Property Use Survey by September 30, 2023

It’s back to school time! Mahalo to The Kōloa Early School, located in the heart of Old Kōloa Town, for delivering a robust schoolyear and summer program for keiki. Providing a superb environment and quality education for Kaua‘i’s youngest has always been at the forefront of this 501(c) (3) non-profit. In 1985, the school opened its doors and has serviced the parents, guardians and caregivers of 3 and 4 year olds with a curriculum that keeps learning fun, exciting and challenging.

Congrats to the organizers of The September 30th Kaua‘i Humane Society Gala Celebration for their sold-out status. In 2022 alone, KHS assisted 2,407 dogs and cats and boasted a 94.4% positive release rate.

Despite all this, KHS is now facing the unthinkable! Because in 2023 adoptions and donations have considerably dropped, KHS is on the verge of losing its no-kill status.

Please join us in urgently supporting Kaua‘i Humane Society, a most worthy 501 (c) (3) which stands on its own 4 feet 😊 and does not receive any funding from the State or Federal governments, or any other humane organizations.
